Gwaihir is the Lord of the Eagles, the great birds who were the friends of Elves and Men in Middle-earth. Gwaihir and his eagles saved Bilbo and his friends as they were being attacked by Wargs in The Hobbit. In The Lord of the Rings, Gwaihir and his eagles played an even more important role. He saved Gandalf from Orthanc and finally retrieved Sam and Frodo from Orodruin after their quest was fulfilled.
