(AUDIO: The Verse of the One Ring)
The One Ring is the most important item in the Middle-earth saga and the main subject in The Lord of the Rings. It was secretly forged by Sauron in the fires of Orodruin with the purpose of creating a Master Ring, the One Ring to rule all other Rings of Power. The Ring looked solid gold with no dents or inscriptions. After Gandalf threw the ring in the fire the script on it could be seen:

The One Ring

Gandald could read the script which was written in the ancient Elvish leters but in the Language of Mordor. He translated the script:

One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.

It was part of a verse describing the Rings of Power:

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-Lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne,
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in darkness bind them,
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

The Ring had a number of effects on its owner. The most obvious effect was that it made the wearer invisible. Its long-term effects were immortality but also a desire to keep the ring. The One Ring could only be used for evil and corrupted its owner. It also had the tendency to be found when hidden. That is why the council of Elrond had no alternative then to set out a quest to destroy the One Ring in the fires of Orodruin. In the end it was Gollum who destroyed the One Ring by falling into the fires at Orodruin after he had bitten the ring of Frodo's finger.

"Shall we continue to our next item: Narya?"

Sure Bilbo, let's look at the next time...
Show me the item list again, I want to see something else...
I am getting tired, let's stop this tour...
