New Line Cinema have bought the rights for creating the Lord of the Rings Movies and they have decided to make it a trilogy just like the book. The three movies have been shot on various location in New Zealand in a timespan of 14 months with a budget of $240 million. The first part: The Fellowship of the Ring was released on December 19th, 2001, and was a huge success amongst the Tolkien fans. The second part: The Two Towers followed on December 14th, 2002 with the spectacular battle of Helms Deep, and the third and last part: The Return of the King will conclude the trilogy on December 17th, 2003. Although New Line Cinema also holds the movie rights for the The Hobbit and The Silmarillion it is still uncertain if these books will be filmed as well.
Peter Jackson is the renowned director/producer of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy which will star Elijah Woods, Liv Tyler, Sean Bean, Sean Astin, Viggo Mortensen and Sir Ian Holm and many others.
A lot of Computer Generated Imaging will be used for various effects. The Hobbits, whose heights should be between 2-4 feet, have been played by normal actors and through CGI and other effects the normal actors will appear to be about half the size of a normal man. Some of Tolkien’s most fascinating creatures will completely be constructed by CGI. Gollum, Treebeard, the other Ents and Shelob will all be computer generated with voice acting. For the large battle-scenes the movie will use a proprietary software called MASSIVE. The results so far have been absolutely stunning.
